Great movie. We saw this when it was at the movies, bought the VHS and wanted to update our library with the DVD. We have probably watched this movie 20 times. Great entertainment. A great performance by Morgan Freeman.

"The Story of Friendship"

Jessica Tandy won a well-deserved Oscar as Best Actress for her portrayal of a sarcastic, cold-hearted old woman living the wealthy life in the South who hires a black man as her driver. It is through this man, played beautifully by Morgan Freeman, that Miss Daisy realizes that she needs to change her ways in order to finish her life in a peaceful and loving manner. What makes the film is the superb chemistry between Tandy and Freeman, as well as the acting by the supporting cast headed by Dan Aykroyd and Esther Rolle. The movie would be nominated for an impressive nine Academy Awards, eventually winning three others including Best Makeup and Best Adapted Screenplay, and most importantly Best Picture of the Year. The DVD comes with an array of bonuses including interviews, audio commentary by director Bruce Beresford, writer Alfred Uhry, and producer Lili Fini Zanuck, and much more. For soap opera enthusiasts there is a scene with Esther Rolle, playing the maid, who watches a soap opera. That soap is "The Edge of Night" and in that scene the producers feature an old black and white clip from the 1960's of that serial rarely ever seen.

Morgan Freeman, Jessica Tandy and Dan Aykroyd star in this 1989 drama. A widow and her chauffeur become good friends. I've always liked this film and Morgan and Jessica were great together. Dan's also great as usual as Daisy's son. This dvd has nice picture and sound plus neat extras. I highly recommend this terrific drama.

Why did I wait?

I must be the last person to see this movie and I wish I would have seen it sooner. Morgan Freeman was amazing, I think he made the movie what it was. What a master he is! And I have always loved Jessica Tandy. Really, all the actors did a great job. What I really enjoyed was the relationship that was built over the years between Freeman and Tandy. He put up with her when I would have quit and walked out the door. The other thing I really liked was that it was a good movie that had NO violence, no rapes, no demons or vampires or sex scenes. Gee imagine that! I'm so sick of all the violence in most movies that I don't even bother watching 99% of them anymore. Driving Miss Daisy was a movie that made me think and laugh, and most of all it entertained me.
