 LIGHTSIDE
Flying Hawk was being interviewed on his 107 Birthday.  The reporter asked him  "Flying Hawk what do you think of the progress the white people made since taking over the country"?

Flying Hawk replied,  "When white man found Canada, Indians were running it. No taxes, no debt, plenty good buffalo, game, women did all the work, medicine man free, Indian man spent all day fishing, hunting, all night with wife and kids."

The he smiled and said, "White man dumb to think he could improve a better system."

CLEANING TIPS

Window Washer

For crystal clear window washer, Mix a tablespoon of cornstarch in a bucket of water, and wipe the solution onto the glass with paper towels.  Rinse with clean water. Great for car or house windows.

BABY WIPES

Since heading the market in the 80's, these moistened disposable baby wipes proved to be great in and outside the home.  From cleaning your hands after changing oil or a tire, clean tools, rub marks off your walls, many, many uses including shining your shoes, wipe with baby wipe and buff with a soft, dry cloth.

To freshen up a smelly drain, just pour a cup of Baking Soda into it, and flush with hot water.

CARPET CLEANER

If you have a cat, get rid of fleas in your carpet and keep carpet, rugs, fresh smelling.

½ cup baking soda

½ cup of cornstarch

½ teaspoon of Rosemary or Penny Royal citronella oil.

Before going to bed mix baking soda, cornstarch, and oil together. Spread evenly across carpet and scrub it into fibers with a stiff brush or broom.  Leave over night; vacuum it up in the morning.

NO CATS; Just want to clean carpet substitute any fragrant oil.

Blocked Drains?

Instead of using caustic products (be green and save money) for clearing blocked drains, throw a cup of baking soda down the drain followed by a few jugs of water.

PROPERLY DISINFECTED WATER

After a storm, flooding, make sure water has been properly disinfected before using for cooking, drinking, or brushing teeth.

Use bottled water that has not been exposed to flood waters if it is available.

If you don't have bottled water, you should boil water to make it safe. Boiling water will kill most types of disease-causing organisms that may be present. If the water is cloudy, filter it through clean cloths or allow it to settle, and draw off the clear water for boiling. Boil the water for one minute, let it cool, and store it in clean containers with covers.

If you can't boil water, you can disinfect it using household bleach. Bleach will kill some, but not all, types of disease-causing organisms that may be in the water. If the water is cloudy, filter it through clean cloths or allow it to settle, and draw off the clear water for disinfection. Add 1/8 teaspoon (or 8 drops) of regular, unscented, liquid household bleach for each gallon of water, stir it well and let it stand for 30 minutes before you use it. Store disinfected water in clean containers with covers.

FOOD INFORMATION

FOOD WARNING BACTERIA

Bacteria may be present on products when you purchase them. Raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs are not sterile. Neither is fresh produce such as lettuce, tomatoes, sprouts, and melons.

Foods, including safely cooked, ready-to-eat foods, can become cross contaminated with bacteria transferred from raw products, meat juices or other contaminated products, or from food handlers with poor personal hygiene.

Botulism, a life-threatening illness caused by the bacteria Clostridium outline, were reported in the United States. Frozen, fully cooked products were suspected of causing these illnesses. The Food Safety and Inspection Service advises all consumers to handle frozen, fully-cooked products in accordance with these food safety recommendations.

Before buying frozen, fully cooked products carefully inspect the container or package. If the package is punctured, torn, partially opened, or damaged in any other way that might expose the contents to the outside environment, do NOT purchase the product.

Do not purchase frozen products that appear to have thawed and refrozen. Reject all swollen or gassy containers or spoiled foods.

Buy food from reputable dealers, with a known record of safe handling. Buy frozen products only if they are frozen solid and only if stored in the freezer case. Observe any use-by or sell-by dates on the package.

When you open the container, inspect the product. Do not use products that are discoloured, mouldy, or have an off odour. Do not use products that spurt liquid or foam when the container is opened. Do not taste the product to determine if it is safe.
Follow the preparation instructions on the product label.
Handling Possibly Contaminated Products Report any suspect commercial food products to your local health department.

If a suspect food is opened in your kitchen, thoroughly scrub the can opener or other utensils, containers, counters, etc., that might have contacted the food or its container. Discard any sponges or cloths used in the cleanup. Wash your hands thoroughly. Promptly launder any clothing that might have been splattered upon.

Botulism is a rare but serious paralytic illness caused by a nerve toxin. Symptoms of botulism include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, and muscle weakness. The illness can cause paralysis, respiratory failure and death. Symptoms usually occur from 18 to 36 hours after eating contaminated food. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a physician.

Many frozen chicken products, such as chicken Kiev and chicken cordon bleu, may appear to be precooked, but are actually only pre-breaded or pre-browned.

Use a meat thermometer and make sure the internal temperature of the chicken is at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit.  . This means really cooking the chicken, in a regular oven or microwave, not merely thawing it.

USE FOOD THERMOMETER

Don't rely on looks alone. Bacteria can spread during ground meat.  Always use a food thermometer and cook at 160 degrees Fahrenheit when cooking your hamburgers.

RESPONSIBLE DRINKING
If you have teenagers, or in fact any adult, impress on them the risks of driving while intoxicated. Statistics demonstrate many fatal road accidents are caused by drunk drivers.

If you're having a Christmas party, provide food with drinks. Offer non-alcoholic substitutes such as fruit, soft drinks.

2 drinks taken within an hour by a person 100 pounds produces a 075 reading. One drink is equal to about 1.5 oz. of whisky or 2 bottles of beer. The rate of elimination for each hour after drinking has stopped is 015. A 200-pound person, after 1 drink produces a reading of .019, so you can see there is a big
difference due to weight.

ICED COFFEE

There are just as many ways of making coffee, as there are different brands. Here are some general rules.

For good results measure water and coffee.

2 tablespoons coffee to each 1 cup

Make coffee just before serving

Make coffee double strength and pour the hot coffee over ice in a tall glass.  As the ice melts, it will dilute the coffee. Top the glass with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Not just for Scotch
star 5.0 Crystal Whiskey Glasses
by Wayne Fogel from The Villages, FL on 2010-06-14
These glasses are wonderful for tasting and Scotch - that given, they are equally good for sipping any other whiskey or for that matter any other spirit that is good enough to be drunk 'neat'. This applies to cognac, armagnac, aged rums, top end tequila such as Cabo Wabo and any number of spirits. With these glasses you will be able to easily distinguish not only the good from the bad, but to taste the individual flavors that make the difference Evan Williams single barrel and Wild Turkey single barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbons.

Pleasant Surprise
star 5.0 Crystal Whiskey Glasses
by Gioco Carta from Italy on 2010-05-11
I was very doubtful when I bought these glasses but after trying them I am convinced they make a difference in taste and probably more so than, say, different shaped wine glasses. I found familiar scotches revealing unknown flavors and aromas.

Single malt hit
star 5.0 Crystal Whiskey Glasses
by Richard D. Strahan from Cleveland, MS on 2010-01-27
I wasn't sure I believed my restaurant-owner/sommelier/friend when he recommended these, but they do make a difference in how you experience single malt scotches--especially the higher end products.

Wonderful Enhancement
star 5.0 Crystal Whiskey Glasses
by Arizona from Tucson, AZ USA on 2009-10-30
On a recent stay at the Westin Kierland Resort in Scottsdale, I took part in a single malt scotch tasting sponsored by their Food and Beverage Department. The beverage director used glasses of this shape and size, and talked about how the shape of the glass can enhance the single malt experience. I was initially skeptical, but as soon as the tasting began I was convinced, and started looking to purchase a few for myself as soon as I returned home. I only rarely drink single malt scotch (too expensive) but I've found my enjoyment of those rare moments increased by 100% as a result of these glasses. They are pricey, but a wonderful way to help you enjoy your favorite single malt scotch, and I recommend them highly. Plus Amazon's prices were the best I could find when I purchased them.

Very attractive and fully functional
star 5.0 Crystal Whiskey Glasses
by Sanjay Mehta from Henderson, NV United States on 2010-01-14
The simplicity and beautifully classic lines of these glasses make them very attractive and they have a classy appearance. They seem rather delicate, but have held up to use very well so far. The lead-free crystal ensures that the glasses do not have even the slightest imperfection, and the walls of the glass blend seamlessly into the base making the overall impression very elegant. I've only used the glasses a few times so far, so I'm not sure about their longevity, and the mixed reviews here about their durability leave me mildly concerned about how long they will last. I use them primarily for drinking single malt on the rocks and they serve the purpose admirably. The size is perfect for a double shot of scotch over a nice stack of ice. I like them enough to get more to create a nice set, but the price point is a slight deterrent to getting more right now. However, I expect I will get more as soon as an opportunity arises. I recommend them very highly. I hope you found this review helpful.

Amazing
star 5.0 Crystal Whiskey Glasses
by K. Stephens from Albuquerque, NM on 2009-12-05
These really are remarkable glasses. The way they feel in my hand is what sets them apart from all other glasses--the glass itself is so remarkably thin, that the act of drinking becomes focused more on the drink than on the glass. They are so clear and so simple, you can't help looking at them. Watching ice melt becomes its own pastime. In three years of regular use (including raucous parties and rough dishwasher loadings), the only glass I've broken was inadvertently knocked from my upstairs balcony onto the concrete patio below. This is an excellent glass!

These glasses are simple and great to use. Dishwasher safe and contemporary. I never give anything 5 stars unless I get a backrub with it.

Great whiskey glasses

For drinking whiskey on the rocks, there is no better glass. The thinness of the glass enhances the flavor of the bourbon or scotch served in them. Because they are thin, they need to be handled carefully when cleaning or filling with ice. I have broken several but consider that to be par for the course.

I LOVE this Reidel glass. It brings be back to my honeymoon in Australia. My hubby and I stayed at an exclusive resort on the Whitsunday Islands called Qualia, and they used these glasses for their special tropical juice every morning. A beautiful and simple design!

I first found these at the Park Hyatt Washington D.C. They still make me smile and feel like I am drinking in luxury with this think wonderful glasses. They are very clear and the right size. They have a flat bottom so if they sweat they stick to a glass table a little, but I just love them. I thought of getting the wine glasses for water/juice but these work better without hitting your nose and are easier to wash.

Occasionally clever, rarely interesting.

Being an admirer of Stephen Dunn's simple, potent work, I am surprised to see his name associated with this collection. Though the author manages to occasionally produce some interesting wordcraft, her work is mired in the pretentions that plague academic poetry, relying too heavily on references to classical works and mythology instead of more human elements. In addition, many of her works are too abstract, in my opinion, to really involve the reader. In summation, this collection is not one I'd consider a necessary or worthwhile addition to one's bookshelf.

Seeks to invoke feelings with word clad imagery

In her poetry, Crystal Bacon seeks to invoke feelings with word clad imagery that evokes a compelling authority by way of mind inspired, mythos influenced, thoughtfully emotional reader response. Hinged: In the sea-dark bed my hands find your flesh/fluid, oceanic--manatee?--and/the scar from sternum to pelvis, the place/where you are joined to you: where the selkie/might hide the other skin that's tucked inside./Or if you are the root of me, the seed's/pod meets itself there. But you're no hydra,/no mermaid, your liquid spine hooked side to/side to ribs rearranged since that impact/of steel on steel that spun you out, that dropped/you here where you have healed. And now we wake/in this simplicity of touch to find/our love is hinged to your survival.
