Electronic Version is Fine on PC

One of the earlier reviews said this and other reference books were not good electronically. I just downloaded this copy a few hours ago on my PC, and within minutes I found what I was looking for. I think the electronic version is GREAT. I don't have to lug around a thick book and there are all kinds of links to move around quickly. I could see why it would be bad on the standard Kindle, but for larger screens such as the PC, it works just fine.

Outstanding referecne book

My team and I received this a month ago. It has become our primary source of information for Crystal Reports. In conjunction with two other books (Crystal Reports Encyclopedia Vol. 2 and Crystal Reports 9 on Oracle) we feel we have the resources to complete our project. This book lives up to its name in "Complete reference", with it we learned to use formulas to create very flexible reports. As in all projects the users always want the option to present the data in several ways, we have been able to produce these types of reports using one report and one set of data, but with different outputs. We feel this makes ongoing changes easier to handle with each report packaged alone. I strongly recommend this book and the other two as references for programmers new to Crystal Reports.

Kindle Version - DO NOT BUY IT, it is impractical

I purchased the paper and Kindle version of this book. The paper version is a terrific reference and 4 stars -- read other reviews, they pretty much summarize it well enough. However, I would advise anyone NOT to buy the Kindle version. It is entirely impractical and useless in that format. There is no good index with links to pages, and the table of contents is unwieldy as well. Even in the smallest font possible, the pages are difficult to use. This isn't necessarily a shortcoming of this book alone -- I've made the mistake of purchasing several reference type books for my Kindle and all of them seem to fail in this delivery format -- but the sheer size of this book makes it ridiculously worse. Spring the extra bucks for the real book. You will hate yourself for wasting your money on the Kindle version. And (no surprise) you cannot get a refund nor a credit towards the actual book from Amazon. DON'T DO IT.

Excellent Resource

The text is one of the first available for Crystal Reports 2008, and is a major revision of much of the same material which has been presented in previous editions (which covered earlier versions of Crystal Reports). As you would expect, it does a solid job of covering all the basics. It even goes into intermediate and some advanced details in a few sections. If you are a beginner to Crystal Reports, then the book will be an extremely valuable reference to you. Even if you're an experienced Crystal Reports developer or you have used previous versions of Crystal Reports this book will get a lot of use. If you're familiar with the earlier renditions of this book (i.e., for Crystal Reports XI, etc.), then you will find this rendition similar, but greatly expanded and better organized. The book has been through several major revisions and this is clearly evident in the accessible, intelligible, and organized materials. Chapters that have been particularly strengthened from previous editions include charts and maps; a new chapter on integrating with Flash in compelling. Parameters and report export formats are covered in detail. Especially useful is the section on reporting from proprietary (e.g., non-SQL) data sources, including OLAP cubes and .NET integration. Finally, the concluding Formula Language Reference is encyclopedic and authoritative. At about 1,000 pages, the book is really heavy--but really useful, too.

Crystal Reports XI - The Complete Reference is the total package for anyone desiring to unleash the full power of this reporting tool. Replete with examples and detailed explanations, this tome more than meets the requirements for any up and coming report writer wanna be. If one systematically works their way through this book and plays close attention to the examples and tips, he or she will come out the other end as a bona fide expert with this tool. It takes patience and close attention, but the effort is worth it.

Great reference manual

I use mine on a regular basis. This book is in an easy to read and easy to follow reference manual. Every SQL statement is explained and includes and example statement as well as the results. The differences between SQL flavors (MSSQL, Oracle, MySQL) to get the same results are given when they exist. A must have for a quick reference manual.

Although I have not had occasion to use this book much since its arrival, it is chock full of information and seems like the ideal reference book for Crystal users. I have just upgraded my Crystal software from version 9 to version 11 where I needed to see differences between the products. This book will be an ideal reference for me in future development of reports.

Solid Instruction Manual & Good Reference Book

Let me just start out by saying that this book is in the Top Tier of tech manuals in both its design and its execution. She understands educational theory. In each chapter she makes good transitions from the general to the specific. The numerous tables throughout the book will make this a solid reference book to keep at my desk. I appreciate the fact that she wrote in a conversational style, shared her opinions, and some of the wisdom of her experience. The numerous tables throughout the book that summarize various functions and dialog boxes will make this book will make this a good reference book to hold on to. When my company had Crystal Report 9, I bought both the Dummies book and the SAMs book. Dr. Murphy's treatment of the subject matter is vastly superior to both of these books. There are a few weaknesses that should be mentioned. Some exercises in later chapters build upon exercises completed in earlier chapters. This is OK if you did what I did and start at the beginning of the book and work your way through. If you don't use the naming conventions she specifies, it will trigger problems in later chapters. If you are one who skips around looking for solutions to particular problems, this could be a small obstacle for you. There is a good work around for this. She has worked all of these exercises herself and you can download them from the publisher's website. There are instructions for this on page 1-20. Make sure to put this in a separate folder from the one you are saving your exercises in. You can then just grab her solution from an earlier chapter and go from there. Chapters 11 and 12 (out of 13) are noticeably not as well written as the first 10. By that point, I had gotten used and had come to expect detailed instructions for each procedure. In these two chapters the instructions were a little vague. There are a few places that steps are missing. I spent approximately 3-4 hours working my way through each of the 13 chapters. That included time I spent playing with various functions in order to get a stronger feel for various functions. This book has empowered me to solve several data mining and reporting problems that I had. These advancements will probably save me the time invested this year. The savings and heightened productivity will continue in the years to come. This is well worth it.

Bad grammar and unprofessional writing

This author needs a good editor. The content is good, but I was distracted by the poor use of commas and the conversational writing style. Examples: "What I have discovered, as well as, many other Information Technology professionals, is that if you create a prototype..." "The worst thing you can do in many cases, is give the users the impression that you know more abou their needs then they do. I am not saying that in some cases that you won't know more about their data, just don't give them that impression, if you know what I mean." If you see no problem in the quotes above, you will probably love this book. It does contain a thorough introduction to Crystal Reports, so I am finding it helpful (despite frequent cringing).

Great Book for Beginning User

I found this book to be very easy to understand and it follows a logical progression. I like the way it is set up to work with the training database that comes with the program (version 11). For someone new to Crystal Reports, it clearly explains the steps and it has very good graphics to go along with it. It helps to see that your screen looks the same as the book so you can see if you are doing it right. For me this manual has been very useful and I would highly recommend it to someone new to Crystal Reports.

Good Book for Folks with Prior Database Experience Experience

If you have experience using Access, SQL or other database software, this is the book to get you started with Crystal Reports. My impression is that those who are not satisfied with this book do not have experience with database development. As an Access user, this book is just what I need to get started.
